The Habit of Rising to the Occasion

If people were asked to name 5 of the most influential Christian books of the 20th century, there is no doubt that today's book would be on the list.  "My Utmost For His Highest" by Oswald Chambers, first published in 1917, continues to mold and shape Christians even today.

The book is a one year, daily devotional with tremendous insights into the Christian life.

Today's lesson comes from May 17th - The Habit of Rising to the Occasion.

Seek First To Understand...

This week we take a look at one of the most popular business/self-improvement books ever written - The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey.

In this book, he lists the seven things he considers to be the pillars of "powerful lessons of personal change".  It's one of the best books I've ever read.

The 5th "habit" is "Seek First To Understand, Then To Be Understood.  It's a timely and powerful lesson for the church today.

The Big Lesson From a Big Life

Solomon was one of the most wise people to ever live.  In fact, his wisdom came straight from God himself.  Unfortunately, wisdom alone didn't guarantee an amazing life.  And when we count up our days, what's left?

This week we use the book 20,000 Days and Counting by Robert D. Smith as our launching point.  Reading from several parts of the book, we'll talk about how to live a life that's meaningful.

Just As I Am - Billy Graham

In this 4th installment of our Sunday School online, Rod shares some great truths from "Just As I Am" - the autobiography of Billy Graham.

If you're just joining us, we're taking a book from Rod's library each week and relating some biblical thoughts that come out of it.

(The video cuts out just before the 17 minute mark. I just didn't have it in me to re-do it... the audio is good to the end - sorry folks).

Rule #4: People Don't Pay Attention To Boring Things

In this 3rd installment of our Sunday School online, Rod shares rule #4 from a book called "Brain Rules" by Dr. John Medina.

If you're just joining us, we're taking a book from Rod's library each week and relating some biblical thoughts that come out of it.

We don't want to be boring!  We want people to hear the message of grace and forgiveness in Christ!  So when someone asks you for a "reason for the hope that is within you"... how do you respond?

The Law of Connection

As you know, I'm looking into some of the favorite books I've read over the years, pulling some thoughts out and connecting them to biblical principles.

This week's book is "The 21 Irrefutable Laws of LeadershipThe 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership" by John Maxwell (the audiobook version is free as of this writing).  This is a classic!  John Maxwell was a Pastor for many years, most notably at Skyline Church in California (that was years ago).  He's now a world-renowned author and speaker on the topic of leadership and servanthood.

This week we focus on the Law of Connection.

On Being Enchanting

So Sunday School and Church services are canceled right now but that doesn't mean we shouldn't be in the Word!  I'll post some weekly video thoughts until we're back together.

This week I take a short story from the book "Enchantment" by Guy Kawasaki and remind us that we need to be proactive in these days...

We need to BE the church - even when we can't GO to church
